Замедление или падение темпов роста валового национального продукта (gross national product). Глубокий спад носит название “депрессия” (depression). Процесс экономического роста носит, как правило, циклический характер: от бума к рецессии и от рецессии к буму (что называется циклом деловой активности). Спад ассоциируется с падением уровня инвестиций (investment), ростом безработицы и, иногда, снижением цен.

Ограниченный во времени спад производства или замедление темпов его роста (способное перерасти в полномасштабный кризис экономики). Продолжительность спада, достаточная, чтобы его можно было назвать рецессией, оценивается разными экономистами по-разному. В США под Р. официально понимается сокращение производства национального продуктав течение шести или более месяцев подряд. Считается, что ее наступление наиболее точно определяет в США National Bureau of Economic Research. Если NBER говорит, что «рецессия есть», профессиональное сообщество обычно с этим соглашается. Единого мнения нет и по поводу соотношения R и S, то есть Recession или Slowdown, рецессия или замедление. темпов роста. Разные авторы применяют эти термины, имея в виду разные явления – следует учитывать это, читая западную прессу. В России, в конечном счете, под рецессией подразумевается сокращение сезонно сглаженного ВВП в течение двух кварталов подряд.
